Robby Bridges
3-7pm Host WCTK-FM/Providence ~ Working in the radio
broadcasting field for 15 years as of March, I look
back on my early career and realize just how severe
the impact of my first professional mentor (and
eventually manager) really was in shaping my work
and how I approach it. John Morgan was program
director of my first station and it was arranged
such that I would be a six week intern as I was not
quite 11 years old. During that time, John began to
teach me every aspect of the radio business from on
air to marketing to sales to engineering. Of course,
being but a grade schooler, I learned a lot about
how to conduct myself as in adult in a workplace
too. After the six week stint, I began coming into
the radio station once or twice a week and my
learning curve expanded and eventually focused on
speech; uses the smallest number of words for the
greatest impact and recall, breathing properly for
the most vocal resonance and even speaking with a
smile for a warm sound. Eventually I was added to
the payroll and moved up the ranks, finally working
for John again when he moved on from Rhode Island to
manage a station for CBS in Boston, MA. Still today,
my entire perspective on executing successful radio
is based on the lessons he taught me at my career's
start and I never hesitate to call him for advice.
Stacey Thompson,
Coordinator, Woonsocket Mentor Program ~ My parents
are my mentors because they taught me to be an
independent woman and never settled for anything
less than my best. They support me in every decision
I make and they are the first people that I turn to
whenever I need advice.
